It's been quite a while since I posted and, while this camera photo does not do the image justice, I am particularly in love with this particular rendition of Ms. Petra Verkaik - which I believe was done later on in her career when she was much more mature.

Not my best work - which is probably why I haven't posted this til now. Phoemela Baranda has a "glow" - probably from her being morena - that's just so difficult to capture in gray pencil. I'll probably sketch her again but I'd use color next time.

Til then this is an unfinished work and will be "fixed" some more.

Nice of her to sign it though :)
This was a project was started waaaay back in 1995. One of my very first sketches that stayed unfinished for over 20 years. Given recent changes in my life I felt that there was a need to finish it and that it would be sad if she was left unfinished and alone.

One of the sad parts about this is that I have no idea who she is. I only knew that she was quite beautiful and I loved how she just sat for the photograph bearing very little makeup and showcasing the true lines of her body - there was no photoshop in 1995. Truly beautiful.

Presenting singer/dancer and stalwart member of Girlz Ink, Grace Oracion. Grace has the wonderful lithe body of a dancer and I'm glad that the former Mocha girl did this for Playboy Philippines, it's a beautiful photo, rich in color and texture. Perfect for sketching.

This particular sketch is actually my comeback to color. I have to say doing color is sooooo difficult. Working with pencil is much easier. But I do see why I had to do it. It's part of broadening my horizons, not limiting myself and opening myself up to new and more... colorful possibilities.

Oh well. I guess I should just look at this blog as a repository. Nothing more.

Anyway, here's my first attempt at a truly fine bronze beauty, Ms. Iza Calzado. I only met her in Summit once, and he was absolutely stunning and extremely nice. Her wiki says that she stands 5 feet tall, I beg to differ - or I was really smitten.

I absolutely love the bronze tone of her skin and that glorious smile. This will not be my last Iza Calzado sketch and hopefully one day she'll sign it.

Kerri Kendall was Playboy's Playmate of the month in September 1990 and a staple of Playboy's book of Lingerie. Kerri is another fine example of how much fun it is to sketch finely tanned bodies as you can produce much more detail out of it.

I recently read her biography in IMDb and was actually not surprised that Kerri disappeared into Europe to live as a gypsy for some time. There was simply something quite bohemian about her when she posed for Playboy and that life seemed to suit her.

Presenting Ms. Sofie Garrucho, as she appeared in a personal photo that she posted on-line. Sofie is the first winner of the FHM Philippines Girls Next Door Competition. Today I believe she's a budding photographer - hopefully not retired from being in front of the camera - and resident beach goddess. FHM's GND competition was an attempt to find a complete amateur to grace the pages of FHM. And I have to say Sofie, all the way from Iloilo, won that competition hands-down.

She's hot, sexy, intelligent and sweet enough to take home to mama. A definite Filipina Girl Next Door.
Presenting Ms. Myrza Sison as she appeared in her set-card that I found abandoned in the clutter of Summit Media's original office (the basement/portal to the underworld in Boni) when the company left for its new home in the basement of Robinson's Galleria. Not wanting to let such a beautiful photo go to waste I kept it knowing that I'd sketch her one day.

When I first joined Summit Media, I do remember an OMG moment when I first met Myrza. And I don't think anyone can blame me. I knew who she was before I joined Summit and she counted as a celebrity. The actual person's aura is so powerful you can't not notice her when she enters a room or even walks down a corridor. And she's not just regally beautiful, she's intelligent and a fine leader as well. Perfection and grace in mind and body walking down the halls of Summit everyday.

There's actually another sketch of Myrza that I never had her sign and she'd probably kill me if it ever went up so... that one we'll never see here.
I've long debated whether or not I wanted to put this particular sketch of Ms. Tetchie Agbayani up on this site. It's one of those pieces that in my opinion crosses the line between art and pornography.

If I was still in FHM and even Maxim and we had to publish this photo, I guarantee that I'd be torn in the debate on whether or not to publish it for one simple reason - her pubic hair.

That one small detail makes this in my opinion a borderline case. Take the rest of her, beautiful brown skin with natural lines - no photoshop here, that's a real woman's physique and it's sleek, beautiful and earthy. The pubic hair however added a dimension that's.... what's a good word for it?

Rude.

I've often thought that perhaps I should try doing a re-sketch of this without her pubic hair. I think I'd have a sleeker image that would not be.... slightly uncomfortable.... for me to display.

Funny isn't it that one small detail can throw a beautiful image awry.

Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-91788430486771145002012-01-22T18:30:00.000-08:002012-01-22T18:30:06.544-08:00Gwen Garci - Gong Xi Fa Cai 恭喜发财Gwen Garci
FHM Philippines opened this new Lunar New Year by presenting 9 Chinitas in celebration. So I thought that since they included Gwen Garci that I might as well greet the new year with a Chinita a well. So here's my signed Gwen Garci that was completed in 2011, but was signed probably in 2007.

I remember meeting Gwen Garci before she became a Viva Hot Babe. She was actually FHM Philippine's first candidate to be sent to FHM International's Bikini Heaven in Florida. And she would have been sent had she not been so shy - yes, she was quite shy back then. The honor eventually went to Cindy Kurleto, who had to unfortunately back down because 9-11 happened and her family got concerned.
Time does fly.
Presenting a random model or "Girl on a Swing." This is an undated and unsigned piece whose topic is a completely unknown model. However it is one of my more controversial piece because it's the first piece that I actually altered. She had a very - and I stress - VERY - sheer blouse on and I thought "Well I can see everything, so why not just take it off?"

Also I really wanted to remove it because, when she had the top on, the topic of the image - the item you were most drawn to - was not her breasts, but her very elfin face - particularly her eyes and her smile. I wanted to see if I could do the same thing without her clothes on.

So what are you drawn to? Her eyes or her breasts? Do let us know :)
Presenting Patrica Ford, one of the immortal staples of Playboy's Book of Lingerie - and actually several issues of Penthouse as well (Not really sure if she ever did porn). She actually won the Playboy Book of Lingerie model of the Year - though I'm not sure how many times and was a constant favorite in the 90s along with Alley Baggett - who I've more time sketching.

I'm not sure where she is now. Today she'd be around 42 and the youngest photo that I could find of her was a photo shoot in 2008. Though she'd forever be known for those luscious lips and her wonderfully toned body which had a natural bronze glow.Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-29705758402077410262012-01-08T05:09:00.000-08:002012-01-08T05:09:43.330-08:00Patricia Javier
Patricia Javier
Everynow and then I stare at this sketch and realize that it was sketched almost 12 years ago - November 1, 2000 - and in all that time I never got her to sign this. Major fail. I'm not sure where she is anymore - having dropped the name Patricia and gone back to her birth-name Genesis - and having left shobiz. But this tall morena will always rank high as one of my most beautiful muses forever.

Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-65402380085318720602012-01-01T21:51:00.000-08:002012-01-01T21:51:34.356-08:00Andrea Engel 3Andrea Engel
Again you can see the heavy handed commitment in the strokes that went into this, one of my earliest works, but I think it still came our quite nice. Ms. Engel's skin color is a joy to sketch: rich bronze skin with blond hair. Note the swelling of her belly - no photoshop here. I have to say that I'm actually a big fan of Lea Salonga. Not only because I grew up watching her on the Sanrio Club and I actually took future Ms. Saigon (Germany) to the Prom, but because of the way she sings. Filipinos without a doubt are naturally talented and can sing almost anything from the heart. But the natural tendency of most Filipinos is to barrel through the music i.e. shout or make "birit" (Which after a while is really irritating).

Lea Salonga is something different. She sing from the heart (Which means she can make grown men cry with her voice - a gift she shares with Sharon Cuneta). She is gifted with a voice beyond what most Filipinos have been given, true, BUT, she's refined the use of that voice to an artform. You could listen to her for hours and you won't have to worry about a headache from so much screeching or powerplays. Music, art, can be subtle and the only way you can get there is through discipline and practice.

She also looks really, really good. My one regret is that this sketch was started before I saw her on the cover of Preview - which made me do a double take. That was I do believe three or four years ago. that's how long it took to complete this sketch.

Sadly, I feel I'm still barreling through my art.

Now if I can just get her to sign this.

Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-88192959900590082462011-12-24T16:03:00.000-08:002011-12-24T16:03:23.006-08:00Merry Christmas with Gelli de BelenGelli de Belen

Believe it or not, this is based upon a photograph of Ms. Gelli de Belen. Either I really didn't do a good job, or well.... it's just one of those sketches of people who, at the time, didn't look a thing like themselves. The only liberties I took in this unsigned sketch done in the late 80s is the addition of the tattoos on Gelli's leg and arm.

I think the tattoos added character and that this sketch truly represents the seaon: Something silly, something sexy, something bright and cheerful, something dark and twisted; Something Beautiful.

For some strange reason, I never signed or dated this work. Further, all attempts to scan it till recently resulted in nothing more than a white blur that could barely be seen even with Photoshop as can be seen here in the original post.

I actually really like this sketch because of the faint lines which is reminiscent of my old sketches of Alley Baggett and Rachel Jean Marteen.Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-83950677186564874822011-12-16T02:50:00.001-08:002011-12-16T02:51:16.843-08:00Superheroine Breast Cancer Public Service Announcements
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font: medium "Times New Roman"; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">Trawling my Google Plus account, I came across these wonderful Breast Cancer Public Service Announcements drawn by Maisa Chaves who works as an illustrator for DDB Mozambique (Of all places)
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font: medium "Times New Roman"; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Strangely enough it has no nudity. But then my purpose here was more to practice with cloth as a material - especially white cloth which become a difficult item to capture when wet and pressed against broze skin as is the case here.
Not one of my best works and one that I should try to do once again in the future.

Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042961827145635973.post-16742285658954136412011-12-07T01:17:00.000-08:002011-12-07T01:17:04.702-08:00Alley Baggett
Alley Baggett
Presenting another sketch of the beautiful Ms. Alley Baggett. I really didn't think that i would have ever sketched a Playboy Playmate for display within this blog that did not have any nudity whatsoever, but well... wonders never do cease and apparently I do have an image of a Playboy model who is not nude.

The reason behind this is not so much my becoming prude, but I believe that this photograph reveals where true sexiness lies - in the eyes, in the attitude, not so much in just blatantly exposing yourself. The mystery is sexy; the fierceness is sexy; intelligence and knowing that intelligence is sexy, is sexy.

And Ms Alley Baggett is definitely sexy.

I had a discussion two nights ago with a fellow sketch artist about how we both felt that our earlier works were actually better. To an extent I agree. My theory is that our earlier work was never meant for public consumption: They'd be on sketch pads which would end up moldy and moist in some attic to be thrown out or burned as health hazards years into the future when were all dead and forgotten along with our dreams of becoming recognized artists.
And because of that, our earlier works were raw. In a sense we were creating through "brute force" rather than through practiced strokes or techniques gleamed from self-learning or through actual education.

And I think that this disregarded free-hand sketch of Ms. Andrea Engel is a perfect example of that. This particular sketch reveals an obviously heavy hand, BUT! you can see the shape of her stomach and the light as it gleams off the skin of her belly, hip bone and even her inner thigh which is difficult to do with a heavy hand. This particular "style" is no longer in my repertoire, my hand is much lighter now when it comes to sketching and actually coming up with lines this... stark... is difficult for me.

And this move from heavy to lighter lines can actually be attributed to a casual comment made by Vicky de Guzman in college while she was looking at some of my sketches and she noted that my hand was heavy.

After that I really made a conscious effort to lighten it.

But I would so like to try something this heavy again.

Denis del Callar Fan-Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12181483878573051191noreply@blogger.com0
